i read the book before seeing the adaptation. the book was better — that's almost always true — but more importantly the adaptation revealed what the director thought the book was about, which wasn't what i thought it was about. both interpretations are valid. i now feel like i've seen two different works and i'm glad i read it first because it lets me see the adaptation as a choice rather than a version
